The earliest discovered examples of true knitting were Egyptian socks from the 1200's. So, it's about 800 years old, at least. Many cultures had knitting, from native tribes in North and South America to Germany. This leads to your next question- who invented knitting? Um, no one's really sure, and more than one person probably "invented" it.
